How many people have you casually met at a coffee shop, convention or park and the conversation turns to music and suddenly, you’re best friends?
Yesterday I was reminded how powerful music can be when a dear music friend (Ali) introduced me to a music friend he had recently met at a coffee shop (Edwin). Edwin was recently introduced to the audiophile community and had gone to Axpona. We exchanged some great stories and explored what we might be able to do together with our network of people. Ali’s wife, Tracey, joined us a while later and the conversation turned to the health and well being music brings. Tracey’s eyes lit up because she works with Veterans whose lives could be improved by some of the things we were talking about. In a few hours we had built a bond.
It’s not unlike how Blue Coast Records started. At a wedding in the French countryside, a Frenchman asked me to pass the butter and I asked him how he knew the bride and groom. Turns out he was not only a friend of the groom, but doing the sound for the event which lasted 3 days.
By the end of the 3 days, we had built a bond over the music we enjoyed, the recording process, and started making plans to regain what had been lost in music - the passion. Jean Claude Reynaud flew over to California to continue the conversation.
What started as a test recording to explore our ideas for ‘realness’ in sound with dozens of friends and artists providing their talent ended up being the first Blue Coast Collection. It also happened that Jean Claude’s father was Jean Marie Reynaud, the renowned speaker manufacturer in France. I was introduced to the world of the audiophiles.
You might be wondering who some of the people in the photos are….
Left to right.. Photo 1… The first flashjam at Rocky Mountain Audiofest where I pulled together 5 musicians who had never met and stormed a few rooms… Doug White/Tidal, PS Audio and David Soloman’s room. If you can name all 5 artists I’ll give you a free album from Blue Coast Music’s catalog. :)
Photo 2… me and Brain (drummer buddy many of your know) doing some whacky music (yes, that’s me on accordion). I recorded his first album and now… well, look him up…. he’s having an amazing career and we still work on music together.
Photo 3… me, Peter Gabriel and Tony Rodriguez at an AES show in NYC. Peter Gabriel is a hero of mine and was at the show with Solid State Logic. Tony worked in technology at Intel and was a great supporter of Blue Coast Records early on.
So what do you think it is about music that brings us all together?
I don’t know, but it makes me happy.
Enjoy your week!
